Addressing the systemic issue of meritocracy, where students feel unprepared, they have much more potential than they think.

1. Identify Root Causes

  • Many schools, underperforming ones specifically, lack funding, modern facilities, and good-quality teachers
  • There may be outdated and inefficient curriculums.
  • Teachers may not have adequate training or development
  • Community and parental involvement may be necessary for students

2. Engage with Faculty

  • Have educators identify specific challenges
  • Partner with nonprofits and local businesses to support programs
  • Involve parents in school activities
  • Listen to the concerns of the students

3. Better College Preparation

  • Offer dual enrollment, allowing college courses to be taken for credit
  • Make AP/IB programs accessible to all students
  • Pair students with alumni or college students for inspiration and guidance

4. Provide Equitable Resources

  • Invest in teacher training
  • Advocate for policies to address funding inequities
  • Ensure students have technology access and high-speed internet
  • Offer academic and emotional support to students

5. Partnerships

  • If possible, collaborate with colleges so high schools are familiar with expectations
  • Prioritize education funding
  • Work with organizations/nonprofits for educational equity

6. Measurements and Success

  • Measure students’ college readiness and performance
  • Get input from students, teachers, and parents
  • Modify strategies based on if they work well or not
